What is a Community-Based Big Brother/Sister?

A Community-Based Big Brother/Sister ("Big") is an adult mentor that is matched with a child ("Little") in his/her community.  Together the Big and Little plan activities in the community.  A Community-Based Big and Little can do any activities together that are approved by the Little's parent.  Typical activities that Bigs and Littles do together are:  shopping, sporting events, visiting parks, museums, zoos, etc.

Who can become a Community-Based Big?

Any caring adult can become a Community-Based Big after completing the enrollment process.  A criminal background check and driving record check will be required.  Community-Based Bigs also receive training and support from Big Brothers Big Sisters staff to ensure a positive experience in the program.

What is the time commitment for a Community-Based Big?

Community-Based Bigs visit with their Littles a couple times a month.  At the end of their first year as a team, Bigs and Littles can choose to sign on for another year or end the match at that time.

Am I too busy to become a Community-Based Big?

Often times, potential Bigs express concern that they might be "too busy" to become a Community-Based Big.  However, many Bigs have learned that it is actually very easy to incorporate their Littles into activities that they are already doing!  Many Bigs include their Littles into activities such as:  going out to eat or cooking a meal, going to church, attending community events, or walking the dog, and they find that it can be great to make everyday activities memorable by including their Little!
