NCCS Youth Development programs restore, reshape, and enrich the lives of young people through creative community-based experiences that enable youth to build: life-shaping internal character assets, healthy external relationships, and socially-responsible civic behavior.

In other words, NCCS Youth Development programs empower youth to:

Grow Up (life-shaping character assets)

Reach Out (healthy relationships)

Give Back (socially-responsible civic involvement)

Goals

  • To prepare youth to succeed in school, work, and their community.

  • To make a positive difference in the lives of volunteers helping Newaygo County youth.

  • To increase public awareness and understanding of positive youth development.

Project FOCUS is an out-of-school collaboration of five community learning center programs that implement mentoring, civic engagement, high adventure and academic enrichment activities.

The program is designed to bridge gaps for students and families by enabling them to access services and educational opportunities. Working together with the schools, Project FOCUS positively impact families and helps to improve academic performance.

Who is Involved

NCCS and the three school districts of Baldwin, Hesperia and White Cloud are partnering together to provide programs designed for first grade through eighth grade. Programs are geared towards encouraging students to excel through a diverse set of after-school programs and active involvement in the community.

Learning centers within each school district include: Hesperia Elementary and Middle Schools; White Cloud Elementary, Upper Elementary and Junior High Schools; and Baldwin Elementary and Middle Schools. Project FOCUS staff service the five sites with nine full-time staff and a variety of part-time staff and volunteers.
